Ned Kelly: The Legend of Australia's Most Notorious Outlaw

Few figures in Australian history have captured the imagination quite like Ned Kelly. A bushranger, outlaw, and folk hero, Kelly’s story is one of defiance, rebellion, and a fight against authority that still resonates today.

The Early Years

Born in December 1854 in Beveridge, Victoria, Ned Kelly was the son of Irish immigrants. His father, John "Red" Kelly, had been transported to Australia as a convict, and the Kelly family struggled against poverty and discrimination. As a young man, Ned became entangled in crime, first as an associate of the bushranger Harry Power, and later as a leader of the infamous Kelly Gang.

The Kelly Gang and Their Crimes

The Kelly Gang—comprised of Ned, his brother Dan, Joe Byrne, and Steve Hart—became notorious for their daring robberies and clashes with police. In 1878, after a violent altercation with a policeman at the Kelly family home, Ned and his gang were declared outlaws. They went on to commit bank robberies in Euroa and Jerilderie, often distributing stolen money to struggling locals, further cementing their status as folk heroes.

The Siege at Glenrowan

Kelly’s most famous moment came in 1880, when the gang attempted to derail a police train at Glenrowan. Anticipating a final showdown, they crafted homemade suits of bulletproof armor, an image that has become iconic in Australian history. The siege lasted 12 hours, ending with Kelly being wounded and captured while his gang members perished.

Trial and Execution

Despite widespread public support and petitions for clemency, Ned Kelly was convicted of murder and sentenced to death. On November 11, 1880, he was hanged at Melbourne Gaol. His reported last words, "Such is life," have since become legendary.

The Legacy of Ned Kelly

More than a century after his death, Ned Kelly remains a symbol of resistance. Some view him as a criminal, while others see him as a rebel fighting against injustice. His story has inspired books, films, and artwork, ensuring his place in Australian folklore.
